Pulau Semakau Intertidal Walk

The trip to Pulau Semakau was fun and educational. Although we had to wake up early for the low tide, we had an exciting time looking at things we had never came across before. The one hour boat ride to and fro Pulau Semakau almost make me vomit as it rained when we went there and the wave was strong when we came back.

When we reached Pulau Semakau, I did not notice what was around me as I was still dizzy. We had to take a long walk on the road as the bus did not operate early. We had to walk past a patch of forest to reach the intertidal area. Although it was only a five minutes walk, I got bitten by mosquitoes.

We could walk very far as the tide was really low. We saw starfishes, seaweed, sponges, small crabs and many other underwater plants and animals. My favourite was to look for starfishes that sink into the sand although I was afraid of stepping on them. I learnt that starfishes eats sand and they do not have brains! The most disgusting thing was to walk pass the sea grass that were covered with water till our calf. We could not see what we were stepping on which made me afraid of stepping into a hole.

After the intertial walk, the bus took us to the most southern accessible place in Singapore. On the way there we saw a monitor lizard crawling into its hole. Although it is a land fill, it is a place rich in biodiversity. I enjoyed this trip and I hope others will have a chance to go and experience the fun too.
